Bridging Transit and Community

Makers’ Gate is a conceptual redevelopment project for the Old Oak Scruff district in Northwest London. Situated at the critical junction of the HS2 high-speed rail and the Crossrail interchange, the project re-imagines infrastructure as a social catalyst rather than just a transit node.

The proposal introduces a multi-layered station complex that integrates an artisans' market hall with high-density transit platforms. By "straddling the rails," the design creates constant visual and physical intersections between transient commuters and the local creative economy.

Environmental sustainability is integrated through a rooftop urban farm that provides fresh produce to the market below, while a public plaza hosts a rotating "Makers' Market." The architectural language emphasizes permeability and transparency, aimed at de-stigmatizing industrial transit zones and fostering a unique urban identity for the new district.

Through rigorous site analysis and section-based explorations, Makers’ Gate demonstrates how transit hubs can evolve into vibrant "third places" that support local placemaking and sustainable urbanism.
