A neighborhood redevelopment plan and multi-use building concept exploring urban vibrancy and residential density.
The Cedars project addresses the redevelopment of a historic neighborhood south of downtown Dallas, Texas. As an evolving urban fabric, the neighborhood provided an ideal laboratory for exploring how architectural density can foster social vibrancy and sustainable living.
The proposal centers on a multi-use building concept that integrates artisanal workshops, co-working spaces, and diverse residential units. The architectural strategy focuses on the "active edges" of the building, ensuring that ground-floor commercial functions spill out into the public realm to enhance street-level engagement.
A rigorous site analysis informed the massing and placement of internal courtyards, which provide natural ventilation and light to all residential units while creating private social nodes for inhabitants. The project balances the industrial heritage of The Cedars with contemporary needs for flexible, human-centered urban housing.
By integrating various programs into a singular cohesive structure, The Cedars seeks to create a self-sustaining ecosystem within the district, promoting a "live-work-play" paradigm that reduces transit dependency and strengthens local community ties.
